India Rising

Courtesy SCIENCE IN INDIA Richard Stone At the Indian Science Congress last month, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh pledged to hike R&D expenditures from around $3 billion last year to $8 billion in 2017. The windfall is meant to turbocharge initiatives to create elite research institutions, bring expatriate Indian scientists home, enrich science education, and equip smart new laboratories. Included in this push is South Asia's first biosafety level–4 lab for handling the most dangerous pathogens, slated to be up and running this spring. Over the next 5 years, an estimated $1.2 billion in public funds will be funneled to a new National Science and Engineering Research Board. Modeled after the U.S. National Science Foundation, the board is expected to fund its first competitive grants this year. Researchers will have to clear some daunting hurdles, though. In an exclusive interview with  Science , Singh explained how his government plans to “increase gradually the proportion...

Direct-to-consumer whole-genome now in India - Personalized Genomics to your doorstep

Avesthagen launches commercial Whole Genome Scanning Bringing Personalized Genomics to your doorstep. Avesthagen will use Affymetrix technology to decipher the association between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs)/ mutation and predisposition to the disease. The DNA chip used by Avesthagen for whole genome scanning features more than 1.8 million markers of genetic variation that include SNPs as well as probes for copy number variation (CNV). A whole genome scan of an individual would provide information to understand his/her own genetic make-up that would lead to an increased awareness about the predisposition to a disease(s). The diseases, which are offered by Avesthagen, include major types of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s, asthma, anemia, arthritis and others. The technology platform at Avesthagen is able to interrogate the genetic markers (SNPs and CNVs) across an individual’s genome...

The AVESTAGENOME Project™

Initiating sequencing of a set of 60 closely related human genomes to identify novel genetic information relevant to cancer, metabolic and neurological disorders. Through this project, Avesthagen intends to establish a direct link between genes, genetics and the disorders themselves.  The study, led by Avesthagen, a life sciences company based in Bangalore, is being carried out in partnership with Genome Enterprise Limited, a subsidiary of The Genome Analysis Centre (TGAC) on the Norwich Research Park..   The TGAC team, specialists in DNA sequencing and bioinformatics, will use the SOLiD™ 4 next generation sequencing platform from Applied Biosystems, part of Life Technologies, to generate draft sequence, and will collaborate with the Avesthagen’s own bioinformatics experts to analyze and interpret the sequence data It is known that many genes on the human chromosomes may be involved during the manifestation of the above disorders. However, the power of present technologies to...

2nd INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE on BIOINFORMATICS AND SYSTEMS BIOLOGY

The genome – sequencing and structural genomics efforts worldwide have contributed to huge data on protein sequences and novel protein folds. However, there still remains a wide gap between the number of known protein sequences and three dimensional structures. The conference will deal to protein fold prediction, comparative protein modelling, secondary structure prediction, protein dynamics and simulations, ab-initio prediction and the validation of protein models and various aspects of structure determination and analysis by X – ray crystallography.     Paper submission open December 2, 2010     Paper submission deadline January 20, 2011     Paper acceptance decision January 28, 2011     Poster submission open December 30, 2010     Poster submission deadline January 28, 2011     Poster acceptance decision January 31, 2011     Registratio...
